Recording sessions at Red Mile Records are now $75/hr. Podcast sessions are $100/hr. If you have been coming to us at the old rate, this post explains exactly why the numbers changed and what that money is going toward.
The short version: we added a ton of gear, we are adding more in the coming weeks, and we are building something bigger than a studio. The price increase reflects the investment we are making in the space, the experience, and the community around it. Here is the full picture.
What We Have Already Added
Over the past few months, the studio has gotten a serious upgrade. If you have been in recently, you have already seen some of this. If you have not been in since earlier this year, the room looks and sounds noticeably different.
Sony ZV-E10 Mark II cameras. We replaced our previous video setup with dedicated Sony mirrorless cameras built for content creation. These shoot 4K with autofocus tracking, so every frame is sharp and clean. Your podcast is not just audio anymore. The video content you walk out with is ready for YouTube, TikTok, Reels, and LinkedIn without looking like it was shot on a webcam.
Sero TV for backdrop graphics. The screen mounted behind the seating area now displays custom logos, graphics, or ambient visuals during your session. If you have a podcast brand, we can put your logo on screen while you record. If you are shooting content for a business, your company branding is in the frame. It looks professional because it is professional.
Sennheiser HD 280 PRO headphones. We upgraded the monitoring headphones to Sennheiser HD 280 PROs for every guest position. These are industry-standard closed-back headphones used in broadcast and studio work. Better isolation, better comfort for long sessions, and a flatter frequency response so what you hear in the headphones is accurate to what is being recorded.
Neewer key lights with diffusion. Two new key lights with softbox diffusion panels added to the existing lighting setup. That means four lights total covering every angle with even, flattering light. No harsh shadows. No dark spots. Whether you are shooting a podcast, a music video, or content for socials, the lighting is dialed in from the moment you sit down.
New furniture and seating. New arm chairs, added couch seating, and a layout that supports both interview-style and lounge-style setups. The room is more comfortable, more flexible, and looks better on camera.
What Is Coming Next
We are not done. Over the next few weeks, the following upgrades are being installed:
Mounted canvas TV. A large wall-mounted display for added ambience, branded graphics, or logo placement in the background of your shots. This is separate from the Sero TV and gives us a second screen for more complex visual setups.
Another Sony ZV-E10 Mark II camera. Adding a third (and eventually fourth) camera angle means more coverage, tighter shots, and more options in post. Multi-angle video content performs significantly better on social platforms than single-camera footage.
Props and plants for set design. Different looks for different sessions. We are building out the ability to change the studio's feel between bookings so your content does not look like everyone else's content.
Additional seating for flexible layouts. Multiple setup configurations: a traditional interview setup with two chairs facing each other, or a lounge-style layout with the couch and chairs for a more conversational feel. You pick the format that fits your show.
RGB wall lighting. Controllable color lighting that wraps the room. Set the mood to match your brand colors, your energy, or just the vibe of the conversation. This adds a dimension to the video that you cannot fake in post.
Interchangeable backdrops. Black, white, and colored backdrop options for background changes, headshots, and photo shoots. This turns the studio into a multi-use content space, not just a podcast room.
Why the Rates Went Up
Every piece of gear listed above costs money. The cameras, the lights, the screens, the headphones, the furniture, the backdrops. That is thousands of dollars in equipment that was not in the room six months ago, with more arriving every week. The old $50/hr rate was set when the studio had less gear, fewer capabilities, and a simpler setup. The room you walk into today is a different space.
At $75/hr for recording and $100/hr for podcast sessions, Red Mile Records is still priced below most comparable studios in Calgary that offer this level of equipment. We call our positioning "accessible premium": the gear and the experience are top-tier, but the rates do not shut independent creators out. You are not paying $150 to $200/hr like some rooms charge for the same caliber of setup. You are getting it at a price that respects your budget while reflecting the real value of the space.
We are not raising prices to pad margins. Every dollar from the increase goes back into the studio. More gear, better experience, and the infrastructure to support the bigger thing we are building.
The Bigger Thing We Are Building
Red Mile Records exists to build the creative infrastructure Calgary needs before the boom hits. That is not a tagline we came up with for the website. It is the reason we opened the doors in the first place.
Calgary has talent. What it has not had is the platform to support it. No central studio that independent artists and podcasters could actually afford. No community hub connecting the creators who are out here doing the work every week. We are building that.
Our mission is to build the platform that puts Calgary's creative community on the map. That means the studio is the starting point, not the finish line. We are working toward artist management, distribution partnerships, live showcases, and eventually a media network that represents Calgary nationally and internationally. When someone says they are from Calgary, we want people to say "Red Mile Records."
That vision does not happen without a sustainable business underneath it. The price increase and the membership model are how we fund the next stage while keeping rates fair for the people in the room every week.
Podcast Memberships: Better Rates for Consistent Creators
Along with the rate update, we launched podcast memberships for creators who record on a regular schedule. The idea is simple: if you commit to a consistent recording rhythm, you get a better rate and real perks. Here are the three tiers:
Creator ($350/month, 4 hours). Effective rate of $87.50/hr. Good for bi-weekly or monthly podcasters who want a locked schedule without the walk-in price.
Growth ($600/month, 8 hours). Effective rate of $75/hr. Priority booking so you get the time slots you want. Social cross-promotion on Red Mile Records channels to help grow your audience.
Studio Partner ($1,000/month, 14 hours). Effective rate of roughly $71/hr. Priority booking, quarterly featured content on our socials, and podcast guest spot pitching across our network. This is our top tier for serious creators who are building a real show.
All memberships are month-to-month. No long-term contracts. No cancellation fees. If it works for you, stay. If your schedule changes, cancel anytime. The perks grow with the tier because we invest in the people who invest in their craft. Growth and Studio Partner members are not just renting a room. They are part of the Red Mile network, and we actively work to help their shows reach more people.
